What is olive pomace oil?

Olive pomace oil is a type of oil currently gaining popularity due to its low price, although its quality is far from what extra virgin olive oil offers, considered the quintessential liquid gold.

But, What is olive pomace oil?

It is an oil that originates from the olive grove, which is a guarantee of nutritional quality, and comes from pomace, which is the name for the leftover remains when producing other higher quality oils, such as water, skin, or olive pits.

How is olive pomace oil obtained?

As mentioned, olive pomace oil is obtained by maximizing the use of the olive. On average, for the production of extra virgin olive oil, 20% of the olive is used, while the remaining 80% is what is known as pomace, from which pomace oil comes.

For its production, All olive residues are extracted to recover the oil, refine it, and combine it with virgin olive oil or EVOO through a chemical process. This means that, although the quality of this type of oil is much lower, it is suitable for human consumption.

What is olive pomace oil used for?

The uses of olive pomace oil are mainly culinary. It is a very cost-effective alternative in the kitchen, gaining special prominence in both the food industry and hospitality.

Olive pomace oil is used especially for frying, as it offers great resistance and durability to high temperatures, resulting in crispy and less greasy frying without compromising the flavor of the food. It has twice the durability of other vegetable oils.

Likewise, it is also used to make sauces, stews, desserts, and even for dressing salads due to its mild flavor, which makes it less dominant, serving to flavor certain dishes at a much lower price.

Properties of olive pomace oil

Although its quality is far from that of EVOO, the properties of olive pomace oil allow it to be consumed without any problem, considering that its taste and aroma are much less noticeable.

In fact, benefits of olive pomace oil for bad cholesterol and blood lipids have been demonstrated, after a study conducted by the European Journal of Nutrition.

Likewise, it is worth noting that it is an oil rich in oleic acid, antioxidants, and other bioactive compounds that make it healthy for cardiovascular health and can help reduce overweight, visceral fat, and insulin levels.

Main difference between EVOO and olive pomace oil

We already know the main characteristics of olive pomace oil, and now, let's compare it with EVOO, which is the highest quality oil on the market.

In this context, the main difference is that extra virgin olive oil is 100% olive juice obtained through cold extraction and through physical and mechanical processes, while pomace oil is made from olive residues and through chemical processes, resulting in significantly inferior quality.

This lower quality will be quickly noticeable in the taste of olive pomace oil, which is much milder compared to EVOO, which is much more intense, making it ideal for consumption raw.

In conclusion, although it may be a good alternative to other oils, especially if a more economical option is sought, the reality is that olive pomace oil cannot be compared to EVOO, which has much higher quality and nutritional value.

Aware of its quality and that it is a pleasure for the senses, at Olivarte we promote the culture of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, offering you a wide range of varieties and brands of reference EVOOs, which we have carefully selected based on their quality.
