What is olive pomace oil?

Olive pomace oil is a type of oil that is currently on the rise due to its low price, although its quality is far from that of extra virgin olive oil, considered the liquid gold par excellence.

But, What is pomace olive oil?

It is about an oil that has its origin in the olive grove, which is a guarantee of nutritional quality, and comes from the pomace, which is the name used for the leftover remains when producing other higher quality oils, such as the water, skin, or bones of the olives.

How is olive pomace oil obtained?

As we have discussed, olive pomace oil is obtained as a result of maximizing the use of the olive. On average, 20% of the olive is used for the production of extra virgin olive oil, while the remaining 80% is what is known as pomace, from which pomace oil is derived.

For its production, all the waste from the olive is extracted to recover the oil, refine it, and combine it with virgin olive oil or AOVE. through a chemical process. This means that, although the quality of this type of oil is much lower, it is suitable for human consumption.

What is olive pomace oil used for?

The uses of olive pomace oil are mainly culinary. It is a very cost-effective alternative in the kitchen, gaining special prominence in both the food industry and hospitality.

The olive pomace oil is used especially for frying, as it offers great resistance and durability to high temperatures, resulting in a crispy and not overly greasy fry, without compromising the flavor of the food. It has a durability twice that of other vegetable oils.

In addition, it is also being used to make sauces, stews, desserts, and even to dress salads thanks to its mild flavor., which makes it less predominant, serving to flavor certain dishes, at a much lower price.

Properties of olive pomace oil

Although it is true that its quality is far from that of AOVE, the properties of pomace olive oil make it consumable without any problem, considering that its flavor and aroma are much less noticeable.

In fact, benefits of olive pomace oil for bad cholesterol and blood lipids have been demonstrated, following a study conducted by the European Journal of Nutrition.

Likewise, it should be noted that it is an oil rich in oleic acid, antioxidants, and other bioactive compounds that make it healthy for cardiovascular health, and that can help reduce overweight, visceral fat, and insulin levels.

Main difference between AOVE and pomace olive oil

We already know the main ones. characteristics of olive pomace oil, and now, let's compare it with the EVOO, which is the highest quality oil available on the market.

In this context, the main difference is that extra virgin olive oil is a 100% juice of olives obtained through the ecold extraction and through physical and mechanical processes, while pomace oil is made from the remains of the olives and through chemical processes, which makes the quality significantly lower.

That lower quality will quickly be noticeable in the taste of olive pomace oil, which is much milder compared to that of the AOVE, which is much more intense, making it ideal for consuming raw.

In short, although it can be a good alternative to other oils, especially if you are looking for a more economical option, the reality is that olive pomace oil cannot be compared to extra virgin olive oil, which has a quality and nutritional value that are very superior.

Aware of its quality and that it is a pleasure for the senses, at Olivarte we promote the culture of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, putting at your disposal a wide range of variety and reference brands of AOVE, which we have carefully selected based on their quality.
